If it were placed in front of the engine intake, it would sit in the high-risk intake flow where debris and disturbed air could affect its operation. Inside the compressor housing, it would obstruct airflow and be nearly impossible to service. On the exhaust tailpipe behind the turbine, it would endure extreme heat, vibration, and maintenance challenges. The aft end of the afterburner case thus offers the best balance of accessibility, protection, and proximity to related systems.
